ICAN is an indigenous organisation based in Cairns. It has over 12 years experience in delivering Indigenous financial literacy programs. ICAN ‘s existing program has been independently evaluated with positive results.
This project expands programs to eight remote communities on Cape York & Gulf of Carpentaria, and two regional towns.
One strand skills up local service providers via 24+ workshops (10-20 people each) over three years. The local service providers are trained to identify financial issues and refer people to appropriate services.
The second strand is delivering financial education direct to local residents, via a similar number of workshops. Topics include personal financial management, consumer rights, dealing with financial institutions and debt collectors, payday lending, credit reports, and managing utility bills.
The project includes developing culturally appropriate course content and resources, utilising existing resources (eg MoneySmart website) where relevant.
$274,000 over three years.
