About St Michael’s Collegiate School
St Michael’s Collegiate School is an Anglican girls school in Hobart for students aged 3-18.
St Michael’s developed a program for students with intellectual disabilities to gain a functional level of financial literacy.
The program involved a structured approach for individualised learning and monitoring of progress. First build numeracy skills, then apply them to real life situations. A key part is helping students to be financially protected, as they are at greater risk. St Michael’s have explored educational material from Australia, UK and USA. This material is a start, but none was directly suitable.
A key part of the project is links with local small businesses so students can practice financial transactions and develop financial confidence.
St Michael’s works with other FLA grant recipients addressing intellectual disability issues.
