About the Centre for Educational Research (UWS)
Dr Catherine Attard is Senior Researcher, Centre for Educational Research at the University of Western Sydney. She is from a primary school teaching background and is President of Mathematical Association of NSW.
The research demonstrated that the creative use of money topics in maths leads to increased engagement with maths in general.
The project ran an experiment in four low socio-economic primary schools, where the students have low numeracy. The research worked with experienced teachers at each school to develop and implement maths units using engaging financial topics.
The research measured whether the financial literacy units lead to increased knowledge, different attitudes and (particularly) more engagement in mathematics generally.
You can download the Executive Summary [1.7MB] and the full report [20MB] of the research and teaching resources. A short video shows how the project was implemented at Austral Public School (7 mins).
