Women’s Information and Referral Exchange (WIRE) is a state-wide women’s information support and referral service for women in Victoria. It has done a series of projects on women’s financial literacy and on financial abuse in relationships.
Conversations about money within a relationship are often uncomfortable and a point of tension. There has been little or no research on early strategies to address this.
The first stage of this project researched strategies that women could use to encourage healthy financial relationships. WIRE used focus groups and an expert reference group (including relationship counsellors Lifeworks and Relationships Australia). WIRE then asked 21 women to trial these strategies in their relationship and report back on the outcome. The successful results of the research are available here. All the women in the pilot found the strategies useful in Stage 1 established that 90% of women would access online resources to help them talk to their partners about money. Women wanted video footage of conversations for them to model.
The second stage of the project became the Women Talk Money website.
Stage 1: $25,000 over six months. Stage 2: $151,600 over 14 months.
